Castle Douglas Shortlisted For Great British High Street Award

Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway has made the shortlist of seven Scottish towns in the running for the Great British High Street Awards 2019.

Voting has now opened and Castle Douglas needs your votes to win. Other towns in the same catergory include High Street Falkirk, Kempock street in Gourock, The Square Kelso, High Street Lanark plus several others.

The Great British High Street (GBHS) Awards are an exciting opportunity for councils, businesses, community groups and volunteers to learn from the leading examples of the ways in which high streets are succeeding in overcoming the challenges of a rapidly changing environment.

Castle Douglas has created Meet The Street for visitors and locals to get to know the faces behind the shops on their local high street. King Street’s independent retailers and restaurants are encouraged to create experiences, workshops and promotional evenings for customers, allowing them to see produce being made, get involved in wine tasting, or even try out their butchery skills.

Ongoing, Meet The Street encourages businesses to take part in civic events like Harvest Festival, in-house tastings and taking their business out onto the street. Another event planned to maintain the community spirit is Ladies Day, with hairdressers, beauticians, restaurants, dress shops and restaurants all coming together. Meet The Street’s future goals include linking King Street’s businesses on social media so they can grow even further, and ensuring King Street is accessible to those with disabilities.

The Champion High Street Award recognises the UK’s best high streets with exceptionally strong local communities who are leading the way to the high streets of the future.

The Rising Star High Street award celebrates up and coming local communities who are on their way to transforming for the future.

The High Street Hero Award in association with the Daily Mirror celebrates the exceptional individuals within our communities who run initiatives and projects to improve the high street experience for all.

All shortlisted high streets will be visited by the Great British High Street Judges who will assess them against their original entry. This accounts for 80% of the overall score with the final 20% being determined by public voting on the website, to show the support of your community.
