Castle Douglas Development Forum has submitted a note of interest to Dumfries and Galloway Council regarding the Carlingwark outdoor activity centre.
The group plan to explore the possibility of taking on the site on behalf of the local community. Initial discussions have been held with the local outdoor education sector regarding the possibility of creating a partnership with a view to further developing the centre for both schools and as a tourism attraction outside term time.
Chairperson of Castle Douglas Development Forum, Sarah-Jane Allsopp said: ‘ The group feel it’s important to investigate running and developing the site so that it can continue to provide outdoor education experiences to local children. We are at the very early stages but it’s exciting to think about this ambitious plan. We will have to produce a strong business case and show that the facility can stand on its own feet financially. We’d like to look at creating a viable and vibrant tourism enterprise around the entire lochside site to support the outdoor learning curriculum. This venture could create further employment in the town and ultimately support other projects within Castle Douglas.’
The forum would like to know what members of the local community think and are inviting anyone in the local area with an interest to send their contact details so they can hear about the next steps. [email protected] or Heart of Galloway, Market Hill, Castle Douglas, DG7 1AE
