Dumfries Museum Set To Celebrate National Poetry Day

Thursday the twenty eighth
National Poetry Day
Come on up to the Dumfries Museum
It’s poems aw the way

From half 6 there’s a party
With local poets on standby to read
Their wonderful work of many a year
What more could you need?

Come along whether you’re a youngster or an OAP,
A mum, a grandpa or a babysitter
There may even be the odd refreshment
But policy dictates…no Bitter

We’ll be celebrating Burns
Telling stories through poem and song
If you thought poetry was boring
You couldn’t be more wrong

It’s a day when the nation
Comes together to celebrate
Dumfries Museum – 28 September
It’ll be pure dead great

A Dumfries writing group will be celebrating National Poetry Day on Thursday, 28 September at Dumfries Museum at 6.30pm with readings from their latest anthology, ‘Alchemy’. The event is free to attend and open to all poetry lovers.

National Poetry Day is an annual celebration that inspires people throughout the UK to enjoy, discover and share poems. This year’s National Poetry Day theme is Freedom.

The Dumfries-based Crichton Writers will be reading poems celebrating Dumfries and Galloway’s wild beauty, history and whisky, whilst reflecting on two of the region’s greatest proponents of freedom, Robert the Bruce and Robert Burns. The Crichton Writers’ new book, ‘Alchemy’, was inspired by a visit to the restored Annandale Distillery. Established in 1836. The distillery closed in 1918 but was meticulously restored by Professor David Thomson, resuming production in 2014.

Jane Richardson, Chair of the Crichton Writers said;
“The genesis of the book was a tour of the distillery led by Professor Thomson which revealed the hard science and arcane mystery of whisky distilling, as well as the long history of the site at Annandale. It was the start of a writing odyssey over the peaks of poetry and the heights of fiction and narrative. We’re delighted with the destinations created and the opportunity to share them at Dumfries Museum, whose collections reflect so much of the nature and history in the book.”

Councillor Andy Ferguson, Chair of the Council’s Communities committee said;
“There is a wealth of cultural talent in our region and given Dumfries’ association with the national bard, Robert Burns, it is good to see National Poetry Day being celebrated in the town.”
