South Scotland MSP, Emma Harper has welcomed news that Dumfries and Galloway Council will ban the use of Sky Lanterns and helium balloons.
Sky Lanterns are small hot air balloons made of paper with a metal or wooden structure, with a small hole at the bottom where a fire is suspended.
The use of the lanterns has been opposed by the agricultural community as they can cause fires, and pose a threat to the welfare of livestock.
Commenting, Ms Harper said;
“When local farmers and various organisations such as the NFUS first raised the issue of sky Lanterns with me back in March, I wrote to both Dumfries and Galloway and South Ayrshire Councils, urging them to take action.
“I am therefore pleased that D&G council, like many others across the country, has decided to prohibit the release of sky lanterns and helium balloons at all major events the council is hosting or sponsoring.
“I have spoken to many farmers about this and they have told me stories of cattle’s stomachs being perforated by the metal structure – or barns and agricultural buildings catching fire.
“I would urge any local authority who hasn’t yet done so, to consider a ban.”
