Council Tax Review Underway for Dumfries and Galloway

Dumfries and Galloway Council is reviewing how much Council Tax each resident pays.

They want to work with all households in the region to ensure that you are getting the discount that you are entitled to as part of our review.

Our Council is committed to keeping council tax to a minimum level by:-

·         Making sure that everyone receives the discounts they are entitled to

·         Making sure that discounts are awarded to the appropriate people

The review  will ensure that customers who are entitled to the discount continue to receive it, and that it is cancelled where necessary.

Households with only one person over the age of 18 are eligible for the reduction and more than 24,000 residents currently claim the single occupant discount.

Discount review forms will be posted to households currently in receipt of the reduction, and further information may be required from you to make sure you continue to get what you’re entitled to.  Once the completed review forms have been submitted, responses will be compared with the details held on the Council’s property information databases to identify who is still eligible to claim.

Those who think they may be eligible for the Single Occupant Discount but have not yet applied are urged to apply online at www.dumgal.gov.uk/counciltax or alternatively contact the Council on  030 33 33 3005.

Our Council is required by law to take reasonable steps to ensure that the Single Occupant Discount is applied correctly and customers in receipt of the reduction are also legally required to inform the Council of any change in their circumstances.

Council Leader and Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee Ronnie Nicholson commented;

“Our Council is committed to ensuring that each of our residents is receiving the appropriate benefits and discounts that they’re entitled to.  We adopted an Anti-Poverty strategy last year, and part of that strategy is ensuring that those in need of assistance get it.  Your Council Tax helps fund critical front-line Council services such as schools for our young people, refuse collection and home care for our vulnerable residents.  It is vital we continue to collect this money in order to continue to provide our public with vital services.  At the same time though, it is vital that residents are only paying what they should be.  Please take the time to complete the Council Tax review paperwork and return it to the Council Tax office by the deadline.”
