Ben is 18 and comes from Newton Stewart. He went to school at the Douglas Ewart High School and will be continuing his education at Napier University from September, where he will be studying Environmental Science.
On Saturday the 4th of July he will begin an enormous challenge. He plans to cycle the length of Britain solo and unsupported over 10 days. He will be cycling from Lands End to John O’ Groats, covering over 900 miles and staying at various youth hostels and B&B’s along the way.
He is fundraising for DEC – Disasters Emergency Committee – who are currently aiding the people of Nepal after the massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck on the 25th of April. The earthquake has shaken the lives of at least 8 million people and left many homeless. DEC member agencies and their partners are working urgently to provide emergency shelter, food, clean water and blankets. Once immediate, life-saving needs are met they will work with individuals, families and communities to support them to rebuild their lives. Ben said: “I chose DEC as I always look to do my challenges for charity and I felt this one was current and in urgent need of money….the event is a 10 day solo and unsupported cycle of the length of Britain from Lands End to John o Groats (South to North). Thanks to everyone who has sponsored me.”
As a cyclist, Ben trains constantly. He is out on his bike most days covering base miles of around 25-40 miles a day during the week and 50+ miles at weekends. Last year he cycled solo from London to Paris, meeting up with fellow pupils from his Higher French class who were on a school trip. He met them in the centre of Paris and caught a lift home on the bus!
