Queen of the South U15 Girls Blues
With the second half of the season now under way following the summer holidays, Queens U15 Blues took on Millenium in a Christie Murray league fixture at NWCC. Queens started briskly and created a number of excellent chances, with Freya Brown delivering a great cross which Holly ovens turned on to the bar. As Queens kept up the pressure, Maisie Copland saw her shot hit the inside of the post and Lois Geddes also came close after a strong run through the middle of the Millenium defence. However Queens were caught out in the 18th minute when a speculative long range shot beat Sophie Ingram in the Queens goal. Queens continued to have the bulk of the attacking play and equalised in the 24th minute when Freya Brown’s curling corner kick went straight in at the far post. Five minutes later Cairn Houliston put a superb pass through the Millenium defence for Holly ovens to latch on to, and Holly tucked the ball away. With half time approaching, Millenium equalised after a stramash in the six yard box, and the HT whistle blew with the teams locked at 2-2.
In the second half Queens struggled to get control of the game but eventually they got another goal in the 53rd minute when Holly Ovens ran in on goal from the left, her shot hitting the far post and rebounding across the goal into the net. Substitute Eve Jackson gave Queens a 2 goal lead with a typical bit of trickery on the edge of the area to create space for a powerful shot into the corner of the goal. Millenium caused the Queens defence problems for the remainder of the game but were unable to put away any of their chances and it finished 4-2 to Queens.
This Saturday Queens U15 Blues make the long journey to Kilwinning.
Queens U15 Whites
Queens U15 Whites travelled to Rutherglen on league business, determined to recover after a heavy defeat at league leaders Hamilton the previous week. If the coaches were hoping for a reaction from the team, they would not be disappointed. For 15 minutes the game was fairly even with both teams having half chances, but changing to a 3-5-2 formation for the first time this season was a risk that paid off. On 19 minutes Stephanie Grant received the ball out wide after another 50-50 duel was won in midfield. Shifting the ball on to her right foot she shot home from the edge of the box. Two minutes later, Grace Gilmour fired home following a goalmouth scramble. Sara Thomson added a third before half time with a strike from distance to make it 3-0.
The second half started with the girls playing some of their best attacking football of the season, creating numerous chances. On 38 minutes team captain EllisMcMillan fired home a rare goal, & Sara Thomson grabbed her second on 40 minutes with yet another powerful run down the left . Amy-Lee Burns made it 6-0 after winning a strong challenge on the edge of the box, & then Julia Liszewska made it 0-7 with a curling left foot effort. Macey Zygadlo rounded off the scoring after firing home the rebound from her own initial effort. Final score 8-0 to Queens.
This Saturday, Queens U15 Whites have a derby this weekend against Threave Rovers at NWCC.
Queens U9 Girls took part in a Fun Five festival at Castle Douglas. The girls played some lovely football, with goals coming from Willow & Kara.
