NHS Cumbria are dealing with an ongoing situation in Carlisle in which an increasing number of cases of COVID-19 have been identified. This is of concern and demonstrates that COVID-19 is present in the Carlisle area and as we know is a highly infectious virus. Due to the close links between Dumfries and Galloway and the Carlisle area this does put Dumfries and Galloway at increased risk of outbreaks.
It is therefore essential that everyone continues to follow the FACTS advice. Whilst we appreciate that many people travel to Carlisle for work, to visit family and friends or for leisure and recreation, at this time of increased risk in the Carlisle area we would ask that individuals carefully consider whether their visits are necessary.
To help identify any possible new cases of coronavirus infection and help prevent wider spread we are encouraging any members of the public who have symptoms of coronavirus (a cold or flu like illness – including a new cough, high temperature, or loss of smell) to arrange testing.
We have implemented additional testing facilities at this time via the Mobile Testing Unit (MTU), and information on dates and locations follows at the end of this release.
Following further contact tracing in Cumbria, in addition to the original three pubs, anyone who visited The Thin White Duke in Carlisle on the dates and times specified is also being advised to get tested. The full list is now:
The Thin White Duke:
Friday 17th July – 7pm – 9.30pm

Testing is available in Carlisle at Brunton Park today (Wednesday 22 July, 10 am to 3 pm) and at Penrith Rugby Club 7 days a week. People can book a test at: https://www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test
If testing slots are not available online it is possible to attend Brunton Park without a booking (on foot or in a car), but you may have to wait, must wear a mask and observe social distancing.
Home testing kits can also be ordered via the national website.
Testing is also available at various locations in Dumfries and Galloway, including Annan and Gretna. Tests can be booked at: https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-getting-tested/
Anyone in Dumfries and Galloway who is concerned about symptoms should get advice through the www.nhsinform.scot/ website or by phoning NHS-111.
In Dumfries and Galloway, the following groups of staff with symptoms of COVID-19 should continue to be tested through one of the NHS testing facilities. This can be organised through Occupational Health (01387 244626) or, for any non-NHS or non-Council staff, through line managers.
- NHS staff, including independent contractors such as GPs, dentists, optometrists and community pharmacists
- Social care staff, including care home and care-at-home staff
- Emergency services, including police, fire and rescue, ambulance, and prison service staff
- Dumfries and Galloway Council employees
