A significant step towards inclusive education for deaf children in Dumfries and Galloway was made yesterday as the Council unanimously passed a motion proposed by Cllr John Denerley and seconded by Cllr Emma Jordan advocating for full access to bilingual education in both fluent English and fluent British Sign Language (BSL).
The motion ensures that all deaf children in the region will have the opportunity to develop their full potential through dual language proficiency, supporting both their linguistic and cultural needs.
Councillor John Denerley, expressed his satisfaction with the Council’s decision: “This is good news for deaf children, ensuring they can access a full education in both English and BSL, which will empower them to succeed.”
“Furthermore, I believe Dumfries and Galloway Council is committed to ensuring that all children, including those who are deaf, receive an education that empowers them to thrive. By advocating for bilingual education in both BSL and English, we are ensuring that deaf students have the tools they need for success, while also respecting and promoting their linguistic and cultural identities.”
Cllr Jordan said “This motion will give our Deaf community more opportunities to reach their potential and bring the Deaf and hearing communities together by breaking down barriers between Deaf and hearing people.”
The motion is expected to have a transformative impact on the education of deaf children across the region, empowering them to grow and succeed in an inclusive environment that respects their right to full language access.
