Leader of Dumfries and Galloway Council, Councillor Ronnie Nicholson welcomed Members to the Council’s Policy and Resources Committee this morning (16th June), then went on to make a statement following the tragic incident in Orlando.
Before Councillor Nicholson began the day’s proceedings he took a moment to mention the recent tragedy, which may have taken place may thousands of miles away, but has touched many people in our region.
Councillor Nicholson said: “Following the terrible mass shooting in Orlando at the weekend Dumfries and Galloway Council would like to pass on our thoughts and prayers to all the families and loved ones of the dead and injured following this tragic incident.
I am sure I speak for everyone, throughout Dumfries and Galloway, when I say that senseless acts of hate crime like this cannot be tolerated and our region will stand together with the LGBT community in condemning bigoted acts of terrorism such as this.”
As Leader of an inclusive Council, Councillor Nicholson has stated in the past about the need for recognition and acceptance of the complex society we live in today and also his commitment to the Council working with our local LGBT community to raise awareness of the issues and barriers they face. Following his comments this morning all Members present voiced their agreement with the Leader’s statement and send their condolences to those affected.
