DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY COUNCILLORS APPROVE LONG-TERM VISION FOR CHAPELCROSS

Councillors approve vision for Chapelcross

At the Economy, Environment and Infrastructure committee on 10th November, Councillors agreed the new supplementary guidance for the local development plan. Included within the new supplementary guidance, councillors agreed to adopt the Chapelcross Development Framework.

The Development Framework Plan for Chapelcross, supported by a Preliminary Marketing Strategy and based on the sub-regional Economic Baseline study, is intended to provide guidance and a long-term vision for the site. Developed through a participatory planning process involved a range of key stakeholders, the Framework sets out a shared and aspirational vision for the redevelopment of the Chapelcross site.

Looking forward, it is recognised that the economy and industry will continue to change, and change will present both opportunities and challenges. Therefore, the plan attempts to account for both the known and the unknown by providing an indication of how the site could be structured to meet these opportunities and challenges.

Speaking at the committee, Area Chairman for Annandale and Eskdale, Cllr Ronnie Ogilvie, said “It is a priority of our Council to build the local economy. There has been a lot of speculation locally about what is going to happen with Chapelcross and about the loss of jobs at the site. I am pleased that the report has been presented to councillors demonstrating our commitment to taking action now. Determining the future of the Chapelcross site is a complex and challenging task that requires a very long-term perspective. This sets out our intentions and gives a clear steer on the plans for the site.”
