Police Scotland is asking for the public’s assistance after a man from Dumfries and Galloway was defrauded out of over £20,000 in a betting type scam.
In February this year the man received a generic letter from a someone in Stafford seeking assistance in placing bets on his behalf, and in return would receive commission. The man made contact with the author and agreed to carry out this request, and thereafter did so over the next few weeks. Over this period the man made a profit. During this time the author further contacted the man and got him involved in Anti-Post betting, and on a number of occasions arranged for someone to call and collect large sums of cash from him, which in total is now over £20,000. The net result of this scheme is that whilst the man was promised a large profit for his outlay in the Anti-Post betting scheme, he has received nothing and is now unable to contact the instigator in the scheme.
Police Scotland want to hear from anyone else who may have been approached or indeed taken part in any similar type schemes to get in touch through 101.
Police Scotland also warn of the dangers in getting involved is such ‘easy money’ schemes with cold callers, and reiterate the old adage that “if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.”
