100 years of women in policing
This year marks the 100th anniversary of women in policing and to mark this milestone a series of events to celebrate the roles of women in policing in Scotland are to be held across the country.
Here in Dumfries and Galloway, two such events are planned, one in Stranraer and one in Dumfries. Both events are being held in the police offices, at Port Rodie in Stranraer and Cornwall Mount in Dumfries, and will be open between 1000 hours and 1400 hours. The Stranraer event will be on Tuesday 23 June and the one at Dumfries will be on Friday 26 June 2015. At both events a display will be put on to demonstrate how the roles of women in policing have changed dramatically over the years. Displays containing memorabilia from the legacy Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary museum will be on show alongside many of the new and diverse roles that women now perform in policing.
Sergeant Nicola Robison who has been leading the group working on the two events said “It is clear that the roles available to women have dramatically changed over the decades and these events are being put on to demonstrate some of these changes. We hope that former women officers and members of staff who served in the police in Dumfries and Galloway are able to come along and share some of their own experiences with us over a cup of tea, and see for themselves how the job has changed. We want this to be a celebration of 100 years of women in policing and our doors are open to anyone who might want see at first hand the opportunities that the job now offers women.”
