Moira Harris of Dumfries and Galloway Council has won the title Practice Teacher of the Year in the SASW (Scottish Association of Social Workers) Awards 2015.
This is the first year that the awards have included a practice teacher category, recognising the importance of practice learning, and the award was presented by The Scottish Organisation for Practice Teaching (ScOPT).
Moira was nominated as a result of praise from lecturers and students at the University of the West of Scotland. Her qualities include wide knowledge of social work theory, commitment to ethical practice, reliability, compassion, and tenacity in teaching complex concepts in social work practice.
Councillor Jim Dempster, chairman of the Social Work Services Committee, said, “I’m delighted with Moira’s well deserved award and I heartily congratulate her. Looking after the most vulnerable people is a key priority of our Council and good social work practice is vital for this. Combined with the awards for student social workers in previous years, this shows the quality of people employed in social work in Dumfries and Galloway.”
SASW is part of the British Association of Social Workers, the largest professional association for social work in the UK. It promotes the best possible social work services for people who may need them, while also securing the wellbeing of social workers. By joining the association, members commit to the values set out in the BASW code of ethics.
