Council Mobility Scooter Scheme launches today
Dumfries and Galloway Council today launched its Mobility Scooter Service.
The new service will be run from the Midsteeple Box Office in Dumfries High Street and will operate Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm.
Council staff will handle bookings and loaning of mobility scooters to aid shoppers in the town centre. The Council is continuing to engage with users to notify them of the service. Whilst the Council is providing the service in the short term and providing a vital service to users of the mobility equipment, a long term provider is being sought.
The Mobility Scooter Service is up and running as a result of Nithsdale Area Committee’s decision earlier this month to grant the Council’s Community and Customer Services department just over £7800 to deliver the vital service.
Chairman of Community and Customer Services Committee Cllr Tom McAughtrie said of the scheme;
“Protecting our vulnerable people is one of our Council’s priorities and providing the mobility service is very much part of fulfilling this priority. It is a vital service that allows our public to access shopping in their local town centre and gives people a sense of freedom and independence that they would not have without the Council Mobility Scooter Service. I look forward to seeing the scheme being well used.”
Mobility scooters can be booked by calling the Midsteeple on 01387 253383. Information is also available on the Council website. You will find parking information, booking forms and more useful information by visiting http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=14163 or by calling in at the Midsteeple Box Office.
