New mobile flood trailer
A new mobile ‘Flood Trailer’ will be based at Barnkirk Depot, Newton Stewart to help tackle flooding in the town and elsewhere in the region.
The Flood Trailer is a container unit filled with absorbent style sandbags and a number of expandable floodgates and is designed to be moved to any location within Dumfries and Galloway.
The contents of the Flood Trailer can be used by the public to help protect their homes and businesses with assistance primarily from the Council’s Flood Risk Management Team.
In addition to the new flood trailer, our Council continue to operate a subsidised flood products scheme. Anyone using products from the flood trailer will be offered a free flood survey and the opportunity to take advantage of grant funding towards the purchase of their own equipment. Councillor Colin Smyth, Chair of Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee said
“Newton Stewart has been subjected to severe flooding, so it’s a good idea for the trailer to be based in the town. However, the trailers portability means that our Council can also respond quickly to flooding events across the region. The Council will continue to protect communities from flooding but people are ultimately responsible for their own property so I would urge anyone with property in a flood area, to sign-up to SEPA’s Floodline Service and apply to the Council’s Subsidised Flood Products Scheme.”
