Parent Concern for proposed ASN cutbacks in D&G Schools
Concerned parents from across Dumfries and Galloway will take part in a demonstration at the Council Offices on Thursday 18th December, prior to the Labour group presentation of their Budget proposals.
They hope to persuade Councillors to reconsider proposals to cut 52FTE posts from Learning Support services. With almost 1200 online supporters, they wish to share concerns directly with Councillors ahead of their discussions.
Parent Councils, disability groups and concerned parents will join forces to express several areas of concern, including the impact of reduced classroom support for young people with ASN and the potential effect on mainstream pupils of increased workloads for class teachers.
Campaign founder Roy Holden said “We met with EIS last week and share their concerns about the transfer of workload to mainstream teachers. Increased workloads means these cutbacks will affect every pupil in the school system, not just those with ASN.”
Local parent Demi Powell said “While parents broadly support many aspects of the planned restructure, we do not find it credible that the loss of so many specialist staff will not have a significant impact on children with ASN. There is no explanation within the proposals as to HOW this impact will be mitigated by the other measures.”
