The historic property, which was constructed in 1884, caught fire early on Tuesday.
At around 2.30am , the historic former convent on Corbelly Hill, close to the town’s Maxwell Street, went up in flames, drawing a major emergency service response, including nine fire engines.
The Lighthouse religious organisation used the convent’s chapel for a time but now that the property had been vacant for some time. There have been worries about potential damage for some time.
