FIRE CREWS TACKLE BLAZE AT THORNHILL FLATS

Teams in breathing apparatus extinguished a well-developed fire in the Thornhill property.

Firefighters in Dumfries and Galloway tackled a fire in a flat in Thornhill early this morning (Tuesday 7 April).

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews were sent to the incident at West Morton Street in response to a 999 call made shortly before 12:45am.

Operations Control mobilised three appliances from Thornhill, Sanquhar and Dumfries and first responders reached the scene within six minutes.

Crew Manager Alexander Halliday, the incident commander, said: “This was a two-storey block of four flats – one of the flats was well-alight. We deployed teams in breathing apparatus and they used hosereel jets to extinguish the fire.

“A search confirmed all persons were accounted for, we checked for any hidden fire spread using a thermal imaging camera and fully ventilated all the properties.”

Ambulance personnel provided a precautionary check-up at the scene to a man who appeared to be suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.

The occupants of two flats required temporary accommodation and firefighters put them in touch with local authority housing officers before leaving the scene around 3:15am.

SFRS crews throughout Dumfries and Galloway can provide free home fire safety visits to help people reduce the chance of a serious incident.

The firefighters identify potential hazards and advise householders of very easy steps to address them, making it less likely a fire will start in the first place and more likely people will escape unhurt if it does happen.

Crews conducting the visits also check to ensure a home is properly protected by working smoke alarms and will even install these, completely free of charge, where they are found to be needed.

To join Scotland’s fight against fire and arrange a visit for you or someone you know, call SFRS on the freephone number 0800 073 1999 or text ‘FIRE’ to 80800, which is also free of charge.

Visits can also be arranged via the SFRS website www.firescotland.gov.uk.
