Today Friday the 23rd of June 2017 is the start of the 3 day, 300 mile long ‘Tour de Dumfries & Galloway’ challenge which will see firefighters cycling across the region, visiting every Fire Station in D&G along the way. The team started in Drummore this morning and will finish in Dumfries around 6.00 pm on Sunday, money raised will go to the SFRS Family Support Trust
The gruelling “Tour de Dumfries & Galloway” will see 11 crew members pedal their way round the region’s 17 fire stations in just three days.
And the local fire chief hopes to raise £5,000 for the SFRS Family Support Trust which supports firefighter families in times of hardship.
Hamish McGhie is the Local Senior Officer for Dumfries & Galloway and one of the dedicated SFRS team members ready to tear up the tarmac.
He said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service maintains the very highest standards in order to protect our communities – but there is no doubt whatsoever that this is the toughest physical challenge I have ever taken on.
“In fact, I am a little daunted.
“But we are taught to train and to prepare, and work as a team and that is what we are doing here.
“We will throw every ounce of our effort to get us across that finish line.
“And when the going gets really tough then we will draw on our reasons for doing this.
“The Family Support Trust is an outstanding charity that supports firefighters and their families when they reach out for help.
“We know that we are helping to raise funds to assist our colleagues – and that will inspire us to chew up those 300 miles and roll across that finish line as one united team.”
The Tour de Dumfries & Galloway kicks off from Drummore Fire Station on Friday, June 23 and ends at Dumfries Fire Station on the Sunday evening.
Those taking part will be followed by a support crew in a 4×4 generously donated by the Crossflags Nissan Dealership.
