Why drive miles out into the countryside to illegally dispose of your rubbish when you could more easily take it to a nearby recycling centre?
There are 12 household waste recycling centres (HWRC) in Dumfries and Galloway for householders, providing recycling, composting, recovery and disposal for a large range of household materials.
HWRCs are located at Annan, Lockerbie, Beattock, Dumfries (Lochar Moss and Lincluden), Thornhill, Sanquhar, Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas, Whithorn, Newton Stewart, and Galdenoch (near Stranraer).
Councillor John Martin, vice-chairman of the DGFirst Management Committee, said, “It’s hard to understand why people are prepared to make more effort and risk substantial fines to illegally dump household waste when they could use one of our easily accessible HWRCs. With 12 HWRCs located across our region we offer a convenient, safe, legal and environmentally sustainable way of disposing of household waste.”
Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of rubbish onto land that isn’t supposed to be used for that purpose.
The Council is responsible for acting on reports of fly tipping and locating and prosecuting offenders. The Community Safety Team can issue fixed penalties of £200 to fly tippers. The most serious cases can be prosecuted through the courts, with a potential fine up to £40,000 and/or a 6 month prison sentence.

HWRCs are for household waste deposited by the householder only and must not be used for waste generated by commercial or industrial activity.
