NHS Dumfries and Galloway is working in partnership with the Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women Partnership (DAVAWP) and other organisations from across the region to host a FREE open space workshop designed to explore the cultural and economic issues around gender inequality.
Gender Matters will take place between 10.00am and 3.00pm at Lockerbie Town Hall on Tuesday 6 September and it promises to be a lively and interesting event.
Laura Gibson from DG Health and Wellbeing has been working with colleagues to organise the event. She said: “While we recognise that men can also experience disadvantage women tend to face inequality and discrimination on a daily basis. These experiences cut across all cultural and economic areas including unequal pay, career progression, political representation and domestic abuse.
“Gender inequality can have a greater impact on women because of the way our society is structured. This event aims to provide people with the opportunity to explore the issues around gender inequality and to identify ways of challenging them.”
Daniel McKeever –Social Work Locality Manager and DAVAWP Interim Chair said: “Despite some advances towards gender equality in the UK, domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women continue to be a consequence and a cause of gender inequality.
“A fair and safe Dumfries and Galloway for everyone is part of the DAVAWP’s vision. Events like this one, which encourage people to examine the material impact of gender norms and expectations and also challenge them, can contribute to this goal.”
Places at the Gender Matters event are FREE but limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided.
