Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club Need Your Vote to Secure Vital Funding

Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club, a rapidly expanding competitive and recreational club for both boys and girls, is calling for the support of the local community to help win funding as part of the Aviva Community Fund 2017.

Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club is relying on votes to increase their chances of winning funding of up to £25,000 which they hope will purchase a range of new gymnastics apparatus to equip their new premises, increasing the range and quality of activities that can be offered. Only projects with the most votes will become finalists, so additional support is vital.

After almost 40 years of training at venues hired mainly from the Local Authority, the Club is delighted to have secured their own premises in the town centre, which they moved into last week. If Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club are successful in securing funding through the Aviva Community Fund, it will provide opportunities for many local children to reach their full potential in the sport, as well as keeping active, developing better coordination, strength and flexibility, increasing their social skills and confidence as well as having fun and making new friends.

Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club were delighted to win Nithsdale Active Schools and Community Sport “Club of the Year 2017” award last week and one of their coaches, Steven McKinnell, has been shortlisted in the Volunteer of the Year Award in the Scottish Gymnastics Awards 2017 which takes place in Edinburgh this month.

Louise Ramsay, a parent of two gymnasts from Dumfries Y Gymnastics says: “We are currently sitting in fifth place out of over 740 projects in our category but we must remain in the top eight to reach the final.  We need to keep the momentum going and need the support of the local community to help us”. Mike Briggs, Head Coach from the Club says “Over the years we have seen other clubs doing what we do, but better. We needed our own premises to dedicate our time to the gymnasts. The more time we spend in training, the better our gymnasts can become. It would be great to get the award which would allow us to get our tumble track and equipment for the boys, which is our big push right now”
