Harper Explores Community Broadband Solutions for Mull of Galloway

South of Scotland MSP  Emma Harper has visited Mull of Galloway in order to find out more about broadband problems at the most southerly point in mainland Scotland.

Emma met with members of the Mull of Galloway Trust to discuss the importance of good broadband connections for community groups, businesses and residents in remote areas.

Commenting, Ms Harper said:

“The Mull of Galloway is one of the most remote parts of Dumfries and Galloway, so it was important for me to gain an understanding of the difficulties that the community groups, charities and businesses which help make the Mull such an important visitor destination are having with broadband access.

“Very recently, their satellite dish was compromised due to bad weather, which seriously affected their broadband connection. This is something that I will be looking into, as well as exploring other potential alternative solutions with Community Broadband Scotland. After all, infrastructure which is sensitive to high winds may not be the best option for such an exposed location.

“The Mull of Galloway is a fantastic, community-owned attraction but broadband is vital to promoting it to as wide an audience as possible. The RSPB also have a presence at the Mull and they need broadband to assist in their conservation work.

“I very much enjoyed my visit and I look forward to working with the Mull of Galloway Trust and local residents to help improve the situation.”
