A PAIR of high-tech robots that have revolutionised NHS Dumfries and Galloway’s Pharmacy Department have been named ‘Jack’ and ‘Victor’.
The robots based within Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary have been officially named following a vote by staff working in the department, inspired by the lead characters in BBC TV comedy series Still Game.
Jack and Victor are fully stocked and are working hard receiving, storing and picking 80 per cent of the medicines in pharmacy.
It takes approximately 40 seconds for a medicine to be delivered to the dispensing technician.
A robot’s work is never done. Jack and Victor need a 10 minute rest overnight and they even tidy and clean shelves.

Susan Roberts, Interim Director of Pharmacy, says: “This is a massive once-in-a-lifetime change for pharmacy.
“The robots will allow pharmacy assistants and technicians to provide more patient-facing pharmaceutical care, with the ultimate of aim of improving the patient’s medicine journey through the new Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.
“A major benefit is more accurate processes, reduced waste and improved stock control. Once more sophisticated bar codes on medicine packaging becomes routine the robots will be able to check medicine expiry dates, providing even better stock management.”
