An Intrepid team of fund raisers will be Passing through Dumfries and Galloway on a 15,000 mile Lawn mowing trek Around Britain later this Summer!
Back in August 2011, Daz Whitehead & Tony Dwight, supported by a small support crew, travelled 1,071 miles from John o’ Groats to Lands’ End in just 5 days on a pair of Wheel Horse Lawn Mowers. In doing so, the team raised almost £4,000 for charity.
Now, the team are busy preparing for a second adventure. The new plan is to drive through all the coastal counties of England, Scotland & Wales in just 7 days! The route will see the team leave base camp in Tenbury Wells on July 11th 2015, travel south towards Monmouthshire before undertaking a clockwise tour of the UK mainland coastline which will be around 2,200 miles.
For the second adventure, as well as making the route twice the length, the team is expanding to bring in a third lawn mower from Mower Madness. This will be driven by Paul Tindall of Wimborne, Dorset.
The support crew will also be increased to five, which means the total team now comprises of 8. Should everything go to plan (and there is no guarantee that it will!), this epic adventure will be completed in the evening of 17th July 2015.
Chron’s & Colitis UK are a charity that aims to improve life for everyone affected by Inflammatory Bowel Diseases – the main forms being Chron’s Disease & Ulcerative Colitis. More than 5 million people suffer with these ailments worldwide. The trip, affectionately known as “The Lawn Way Round” will see the team aiming to raise as much money as possible for this worthy cause.
We are officially on countdown for the The Lawn Way Round!!,All the thrills and spills of motorsport, using the latest in cutting edge technology. Written by Daz Whitehead
Firstly, we have now published the route! This has been a mammoth task and it has taken weeks to get this right. We have used the ridewithgps.com website because it allows the route to be exported to Garmin satnav’s. You can view it on our webpage at http://nwlmra.org/pages/the-lawn-way-round.html
The team comprises 8 people. 3 driving the lawn mowers, 3 out-riders on motorbikes, and 2 in a support van.
Tony Dwight, Paul Tindall & I will drive the three Wheel Horse lawn mowers.
Mark Oldham, Mick Chapman & Mark Jaffe will ride three motorbikes.
TV Kev” . Kev is most famous for his Sky 1 interview on motorsport, and brings a can-do attitude combined with a wealth of mechanical knowledge to the team. & Mike Breakwell will drive the support van supplied by Phoenix Motorcycle Training, Croydon (but not at the same time!).
All in, we will cover 2158 miles each (assuming we don’t get lost!). Between the 3 lawn mowers, 3 motorbikes, and the van, we will travel over 15,000 miles in just 7 days.
The stop-overs are planned at The Black Lion Inn on Anglesey for day 1, Mabie House Hotel, Dumfries for day 2, Newton Hotel, Nairn for day 3, Harry Vaulkhard’s farmhouse for day 4, Kevin Grimer’s house for day 5, day 6 Holme Bush Inn in Corfe Mullen , and finally day 7 will be back to base camp at Tenbury Wells.
Fuel wise, we have most of it sorted out. Frank Phillips will cover the diesel for the van. Phoenix Motorcycle Training in Croydon will cover the fuel for the bikes, and John Gibson & Son Blacksmith will provide 200 litres of unleaded for the lawn mowers.
We have also had donations of parts from Rock Oil, NGK spark plugs and Ron’s Bits. Aside from this, several people have donated cash. Full details of our supporters can be seen on our webpage at http://nwlmra.org/pages/the-lawn-way-round.html
– Cash donations towards the logistics of the event from NWLMRA members
– Espo Ltd have provided 2 torque convertor driver units
– Lombardini UK have provided engine service kits for the Kohler powered lawn mowers
The aim of this trip is raise as much money as possible for Crohns & Colitis UK – visit their webpage at http://www.crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/
I have, tentatively, set the goal at £5,000 but I will be disappointed if we don’t reach this target and surpass it by some way.
Any support we receive will be greatly appreciated! You can Donate to http://www.crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/
We are progressing nicely but time is starting to run out fast! Their are still several items that we need to source including:
– Camping equipment
– 200 litres of unleaded or a way to fund it
– 12 volt batteries and lights
