TREE SURGEON RESCUES KESTRAL FOUND TANGLED IN A TREE – NEWTON STEWART

The Scottish SPCA was called after a kestrel was spotted tangled in a tree in Dumfries and Galloway.
Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted when a member of the public spotted the bird in Newton Stewart on 20 April.
The kestrel is now being cared for by a local bird of prey rehabilitator and it is hoped she will make a full recovery.
Animal Rescue Officer Danielle Higgins said, “A lady was walking her dog when she noticed the kestrel tangled in string some 20 feet up the tree.
“The bird was tethered at the very top and in her panic to try and free herself was only becoming more tangled.
“I called tree surgeon Mark Fitzsimmons who dropped everything and came right away to help.
“He climbed up the tree and cut the bird free and I then took her to the vets to have the string cut from her leg.
“Kestrels are unfortunately on the decline and have an amber status in the UK.  “Thankfully, this one was very lucky and will likely make a full recovery.
“This incident serves as a reminder as to why it’s so important for people to clear up after themselves.
“I’d to thank the tree surgeon for attending so promptly to help this bird.”
Anyone who discovers an injured or distressed wild animal should call the Scottish SPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
