£6000 Raised at Kirkcudbright Rotary Charity Sports Dinner

Sunday morning saw some very relieved Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Kirkcudbright inspecting a remarkably clear and clean Cochran Hall. That meant that a line could finally be drawn under what had been a very successful and enjoyable Charity Sports Dinner that had been held the previous evening.

An excellent venue was matched by superb food served by some very efficient waiters and waitresses, including some volunteer Academy students. Guests were welcomed by Academy student Euan Donald playing the bagpipes and later, two outstanding speakers, Frank McGarry and Jim Fleming thoroughly entertained an enthralled audience.

Having enjoyed such entertainment, it was no surprise that the raffle, the Irish bingo, the silent auction and the open auction of prizes, generously given by Rotarians and members of the local community, proved to be a tremendous financial success with over £6,000 being raised for the chosen charities. Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ programme, the local Riding for the Disabled School based at Barstobrick and the Johnston School project were the designated beneficiaries.

Special thanks must go to auctioneer David Mitchell, to the MC for the night, the evergreen Maurice Halliday, to Academy Head Girl Anna Cooper whose description of Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign was both enlightening and persuasive and to all those who kindly donated prizes.
