It’s a ‘Snow Day’ for Kirkcudbright’s Red Squirrels

Local photographer David Henderson of Callan Media has captured some fantastic images of a red Squirrel playing with a Snowman at the brand new Barrhill Woods Red Squirel and Bird watching hide at Kirkcudbright.

Chair of the local red  squirrel group and volunteer Rob Asbridge who runs the hide said We may not realise it living in such a favoured area but Red Squirrels are high on many people’s must see list. We hope that by providing a Red Squirrel watching point we will encourage visitors into the area which will hopefully benefit local businesses.”
Volunteer Rob recently won the  “Rusty Bog” Volunteer Award for all the hard work he has put into helping to protect the red squirrels in the Kirkcudbright  area and for the hard work he put into the construction of the community base and red squirrel hide at Barrhill woods for the local community to enjoy and value their local red squirrels.

The Kirkcudbright Red Squirrel Group was formed in summer of 2018 to bring together local people keen to protect the local red squirrel population.

David Henderson who took the stunning images after a recent cold spell of snow and frost said “Rob Asbridge is up there every day topping up the feeders, the squirrels are really getting used to people.”
If you sit quietly and patiently in the hide you should be lucky enough to see them too. The hide is normally open daily from 8am and is free to use for both the local community and tourists alike.
