Let’s Start Supporting Our NHS Staff

Colin Smyth MSP has again called on the Scottish Government to provide better support to NHS staff across Dumfries and Galloway.

Figures released today (Tuesday 17 January) show that yet again, the NHS waiting time targets are being missed in, with a worrying number of patients waiting more than 4 hours to be seen in our Accident and Emergency Departments.

Nationally these figures are the worst we have seen in 2 years. In Dumfries and Galloway 136 people had to wait more than 4 hours in A&E before being seen last week, including 5 people who had to wait more than 8 hours. Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary

Shadow Health spokesperson Colin Smyth said:

“Despite the best efforts of the local NHS and the life changing work of NHS staff, these figures show they are not getting the support they need. There is only so much you can expect from the staff- we need more staff and resources to help the NHS deal with growing demand. We are seeing almost daily now reports of hospitals struggling to cope. It’s time for the SNP Government to stop denying there is a problem and start to have a serious debate about we fund our NHS.

The number of delayed discharges is rising, staff morale is at an all-time low and now patients are having to wait up to 8 hours just to be seen.”
