Lincluden Versus the World! YOUR VOTE IS NEEDED

Lincluden Collegiate Church (otherwise known as Lincluden Abbey) has been selected to represent ‘Dumfries and Galloway’ in a national historic locations competition, competing against every region in Scotland. To place among the top six will see Lincluden feature as a centrepiece to Scottish Archaeology Month.

‘Scotland in Six: Hidden Gems’ is a competition run by ‘Dig It!’ as part of ‘Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage, and Archaeology’. Winners are decided by public vote via Facebook, with one ‘like’ on the photograph of the Historic site constituting one vote for that site. Lincluden Abbey is competing against other unique historic sites across Scotland, including major cities- now is the time to put Dumfries and Galloway on the map.

While Lincluden Collegiate Church hosts the tomb of Princess Margaret of Scotland, and has an amazing history spanning hundreds of years, it has fallen shy of the public attention it deserves in times bygone; but thanks to the work of ‘Hidden Histories of Dumfries and Galloway’, a local project delivered by Community Development company ‘Sleeping Giants’, the Abbey is being brought back to the public eye and is becoming a hub for a number of exciting history projects throughout the summer.

Debbie McDowall, creative director of ‘Sleeping Giants’ said: “Lincluden Abbey is a special place to many people living in North-West Dumfries. It’s amazing to be delivering a project hand in hand with community members to bring Lincluden the attention and support it deserves. We’ve attracted Heritage Lottery Funding through the ‘Stories, Stones, and Bones’ programme to deliver a summer programme of events, many of which involve the Abbey as a backdrop. We’re also really keen to get Lincluden Abbey to place in the top six of the ‘Hidden Gems’ competition to prove to the rest of Scotland that North-West Dumfries has historically been a very important place, but this hasn’t been fully recognised until now. We’re also really keen to see Lincluden rise to the challenge of hosting events in September as part of the Scottish month of Archaeology- who knows what we’ll dig up?”

The ‘Scotland in Six: Hidden Gems’ competition is delivered by ‘Dig It!’ and aims to bring wider public awareness to sites of historic significance which are supported less by major institutions.

Hidden Histories of Dumfries and Galloway is a wider historical project aimed at increasing awareness and engagement with local history and reconnecting people in North-West Dumfries with their forgotten cultural heritage.
