LOCAL MP AND HIS GRANDSON TAKE PART IN FOOTBALL FUNDRAISER FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS TRUST

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown took part in Cystic Fibrosis Trust’s annual football fundraiser last week to raise funds for charity.
Along with his grandson, Daniel Carey, Russell took part in the match as part the of the UK Parliamentary football team against the Cystic Fibrosis Trust XI which was made up of supporters of the Trust and celebrities such as Angus Deayton, DJ Spoony, international high jumper, Dalton Grant, X Factor contestant Kye Sones, Chris Wolstenholme of the band Muse, and journalist, Gavin Ramjaun.
The match, which was played at Fulham’s ground, Craven Cottage, was a thriller with the Trust team winning 6 – 5 after having been 5 -1 in the lead at one point. As well as raising awareness of the Trust work, it also raised funds with the event sponsors, National Grid presenting a cheque for £20,000 at the start of the match and thousands more to come in fundraising by the supporters who took part.
Commenting on the match, Russell Brown said:
“It was a great match and a fun day for a very serious purpose. It raised substantial funds for the charity and was an excellent way to promote the charity. I know that everyone involved really enjoyed the day and I am grateful for everyone who provided sponsorship.”
“I am glad we could raise so much money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, as it does excellent work in research and clinical care as well as providing practical advice and support to people with Cystic Fibrosis and their families. One young man, 28 yr-old Mark McKenna, has cystic fibrosis and he took lots of medication on the day as he was absolutely determined to take part in the match just to show that sufferers do try to lead as normal a life as possible. ”
