LOCAL POLITICIANS VISIT BSW TIMBER TO DISCUSS BUSINESS SUCCESS
This past Friday (25 April 2014) Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown and MEP David Martin visited the BSW Timber site in Dalbeattie to meet with management and take a tour of the site.
Mr Brown and Mr Martin were given a tour of the site, going into the mill control room as well as seeing how the different types of wood were made and cut. They were also given a presentation about the site as well as the UK-wide business which looked at the different aspects of their sites across the country such as number of employees and what kind of wood they deal with on site.
On the visit Russell Brown said:
“BSW Timber is one of our region’s economic success stories having recently announced the hiring of more staff on the Dalbeattie site. At a time when the local economy is facing many challenges, it is good to see that there are businesses prospering and growing. BSW hire nearly 1000 people across the UK with eight distribution sites across the country: from Tilbury to Fort William. A number of businesses in our region have sites UK wide and for many local firms, their biggest market is the rest of the UK. The visit highlighted the importance of the current UK wide market place and the importance of not placing any barriers in the way of cross border trade.”
David Martin, Scotland’s senior MEP and Scottish Labour’s number one European candidate for the upcoming European Elections in May, said:
“I’ve visited Dumfries and Galloway on many occasions but it was good to be back to meet with people across the region, including the visit to BSW to hear about their recent success.”
“With the European Parliament Elections taking place on 22 May it was an opportunity to highlight just how important Europe is to people and businesses in Dumfries and Galloway. I believe that Scottish Labour is to deliver for Scotland in Europe. Our Labour MEPs sit in one of the largest groups in the European Parliament. Being part of the UK means Scotland has a strong voice at the top table and gives us clout so we are able to deliver on jobs, work-place rights, the cost of living and climate change. Together as part of the UK we can have the best of both worlds in Europe. A distinct Scottish voice on Scottish issues backed up by being part of one the UK, one of the largest Member States in Europe”
Following the visit to BSW Timber, David and Russell joined Shadow Energy Secretary Caroline Flint, Labour’s 2015 general election candidate for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale Archie Dryburgh and local MSP Elaine Murray in visiting the Steven’s Croft Biomass Power station in Lockerbie. During their visit, they talked with the local staff about the forthcoming independence referendum and how Scotland benefit’s from a shared energy market across the UK as well as Labour’s plan to freeze gas and electricity bills and reform the energy market when Labour forms the next Government in 2015. After talking with the staff, they were given a tour of the Steven’s Croft biomass station.
