A local college student from Dumfries and Galloway is reaching out to parents and carers across the region to take part in an anonymous survey exploring the benefits of outdoor learning for children.
Amelia Kurowska, a 18 year-old student currently studying HNC Childhood Practice at Dumfries and Galloway College, is undertaking a graded unit project as part of their qualification. The focus of the project is on how outdoor learning experiences positively impact children’s development, health, and wellbeing—and how these opportunities have changed over time.
The survey aims to gather the perspectives of those most closely involved in children’s lives: their parents and carers. It is open to anyone with childcare responsibilities and takes just a few minutes to complete.
“This project is really important to me, not just academically but personally,” said Amelia. “I’ve always had a passion for working with children and believe that outdoor play and learning is one of the most valuable things we can offer them. I’d really love to hear from as many local families as possible—it would mean so much and really help with my research.”
The idea for the project came from both personal interest and experience gained through college. Amelia became intrigued by the benefits of outdoor learning after taking part in placement as part of their course. Seeing how children engage, learn, and thrive in outdoor environments sparked a deeper interest in exploring how these opportunities have evolved and why they’re so valuable in early years education.
The student is hoping to collect responses throughout April and is encouraging local parents and carers to share the survey with others in their community.
“Whether it’s a forest school, time in the garden, or simply a walk to the park—outdoor learning comes in many forms,” Amelia added. “By completing this survey, you’re helping to highlight its benefits and support my journey in gaining a deeper understanding of how things have changed and improved over time.”
The survey is completely anonymous and only takes around 5 minutes to complete. All responses will be used purely for educational purposes as part of the student’s graded unit.
