A major milestone has been reached regarding the redevelopment of the former George Hotel, Stranraer with planning applications now submitted.
In partnership with the Stranraer Development Trust, the Council has engaged extensively with the community and stakeholders, including South of Scotland Enterprise (SoSE) and Borderlands, to establish a sustainable future for the site, and has identified the potential for the establishment of an arts, culture, and activity centre. The new use of the building has been carefully planned so as not to duplicate that of other facilities in the town.
The submission of planning and listed building applications will provide momentum for the site’s successful regeneration. A proposal for funding has been submitted to the UK Government’s Levelling-Up Fund, and the design team will continue to refine the project while waiting for a response.
Chair of the Economy and Resources Committee, Cllr Katie Hagmann, said: “The condition of the former George Hotel at Stranraer has been identified as a main concern for some time now, so I am pleased that it was also identified through the reshaping Stranraer and the West programme. This landmark, which is of great significance to Stranraer, is at serious risk of further deterioration, which could undermine the wider plans to build a resilient economy for the town and surrounding area. As a result of the valuable community feedback and involvement in the project, finally progress is being made and I am very delighted to see the project going forward in this direction.”
Vice Chair, Cllr Sean Marshall, said: “There is a strong commitment on the part of our Council to ensure Stranraer continues to grow as a marine leisure destination, and the development of an anchor attraction on site will play a significant role in achieving that goal. It has been positive to see the progress made on this vital community-centred project so far, and I am hopeful that this impressive development programme will enhance the vibrancy of our communities in and around Stranraer.”
