SNP Council Group Leader Andy Ferguson today (Wednesday) called on members of D&G Council’s Economy, Environment & Infrastructure Committee (EEI) to seek a compromise solution for the Whitesands flood defences scheme.
Cllr. Ferguson successfully proposed at today’s meeting of the Council’s Nithsdale Area Committee that the EEI Committee should be urged to heed public concerns and look for a solution which is as acceptable to the people of Nithsdale as possible. Cllr. Ferguson’s proposal was accepted unanimously.
Cllr. Ferguson commented following the meeting:
“We know there is widespread concern about the current proposal – at best the feedback from the Council consultation exercise shows practically an even split of public opinion for and against, but we can’t escape the fact that thousands of residents have stated their opposition outwith that consultation.
“The Council, and members of the EEI Committee in particular, now need to heed these concerns and look for a compromise which satisfies both the need to tackle the problem and has wider public support than the current plan.”
