OPERATION ZENITH
Operation Zenith was a national Police Scotland initiative which ran between April and the end of September 2014 aimed at improving motorcycle rider behaviour in order to reduce the number of casualties resulting from road collisions. “Seasonal leisure motorcycling continues to maintain its growth in popularity nationwide and many of the rural road here in Dumfries and Galloway are popular with motorcyclists, both local and those visiting the area” explains Neill Hewitson, Dumfries and Galloway Divisional Road Policing Inspector.
“Over the period of Operation Zenith, roads policing officers have been out and about on the roads across the region maintaining a focus on those who ride motorcycles with the aim of promoting safe and responsible motorcycling whilst also enforcing the core road traffic offences which contribute to road collision casualties. As part of the operation we held a very successful open day for motorcyclists at Lockerbie Police Office where were able to engage and interact with riders about all aspects of motorcycling safety. The day was well attended and officers were able to give out sound, practical advice and tips on safe motorcycling, as well as carry out an actual assessment of on a test ride for those who volunteered to take it.”
“Enforcement of the core road traffic laws will continue by Police Scotland Officers, and only last week one rider was caught speeding and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal in relation to driving at a speed of over 140 miles per hour on the A76 road, which has a 60 mph limit on it.”
