NHS Dumfries and Galloway and the Dumfries and Galloway Council are working in partnership to procure a seven mile long fibre optic cable around Dumfries town, a contributing factor in the delivery of a new ‘digital hospital’, new data centre, and the flexibility to support joined up services throughout the region.
Preparation work for the cable to be installed started in May this year and is currently on schedule. The next part of the series of works requires that Park Road be closed to through traffic from the 8th August for up to four weeks. Access to houses in the area will be maintained throughout.
The works are being carried out by David Hardie Engineering Ltd.
The Board and the Council would like to highlight that this is essential work to enable the delivery of improved information technology for public services in our region, and the new hospital which is scheduled to open in December 2017. They would also like to reassure the public that they will be given advance notice as the works progress through the town over the next twelve months.
Julie White, Chief Officer for Integration said: “This work is essential to ensure that we deliver a state of the art new district general hospital with the most up to date information technology. The work will take a number of months to complete and we will do our utmost to ensure that any disruption to the public is minimised. NHS Dumfries and Galloway are working in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Council and this development will help both organisations deliver efficient, technology enabled services and by working together we can ensure best value for the public purse.”
