Refill D&G is a practical campaign led by the Crichton Carbon Centre to make Dumfries and Galloway a region in which topping up your refillable water bottle becomes a cultural norm. The aim is to have refill points in every corner of the region, via cafes, retailers, hotels and businesses.
A partnership with Refill Bristol means that all participating businesses will have their details and a picture uploaded on the Refill app. So whether you are a visitor to the area or live here you will easily be able to find a refill station where you can fill up your water bottle for free!
The campaign is increasingly important due to the increase of plastic production. Worldwide there are around 8 million tonnes of plastic ending up in our oceans each year. Our shorelines, forests and streets are littered with bottles and lids and a recent study undertaken by Plymouth University found that a third of the fish in UK waters contain plastic, so it’s already in our food chain.
As a region it’s time to take a stand and stem the flow of plastics by encouraging behaviour change towards reusable bottles. Every little bit that we can contribute to reducing our plastic waste can make a huge difference.
The response to the campaign so far has been incredibly supportive and positive. These businesses have already signed up as refill points across the region; Logan Royal Botanical Gardens, Laggan Outdoor Centre, Loch Arthur, Galloway Activity Centre, D&G College, The Crichton College Campus, Neuros, Frescos, Easterbrook, Grierson and The Stove. With further organisations pledging to reduce their plastic water bottle use; Solway Firth Partnership, The Stove and D&G Chamber of Commerce.
D&G are the first region in Scotland to champion the cause and The Carbon Centre plan to expand the campaign out to the rest of Scotland in the near future.
