Red squirrel shot in Lockerbie
The Scottish SPCA and Police Scotland are appealing for information after a red squirrel was shot in Lockerbie.
Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted on 21 September when the animal was discovered dead in a field at Gallaberry Road near Torwood Road.
An undercover inspector with the Scottish SPCA’s Special Investigations Unit said, “A male suspect was seen in the area cycling with what is believed to have been an air rifle or similar in a gun slip worn over his back.
“He is described as being of stocky build and was wearing a camouflage hat and jacket.
“A post-mortem of the squirrel confirmed it had been shot and we are investigating this incident with Police Scotland.
“Red squirrels are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and it is an offence to intentionally or recklessly kill or injure these animals.
“We would welcome any information as we have not had any leads so far.
Anyone who can help us is urged to contact our animal helpline on 03000
999 999 or Police Scotland on 101.”
