A VIDEO featuring pupils at a Dumfries primary school has been helping to promote a community message around good oral health.
The Lochside Primary pupils feature in the first of three weekly videos being showcased on social media as part of ongoing work with the community in North West Dumfries.
Carol Maxwell is Principal Teacher at Lochside Primary, and she said: “The pupils had been undertaking work looking at issues around oral health – what contributes to poor oral health, the problems that can result and how we can all enjoy better oral health.
“This included looking at the impact of sweets and fizzy drinks on the state of teeth and gums, and how a healthier diet can help both mouths and bodies.
“We thought it was a good idea to capture those findings in a video, and help to spread what they had learned.”
The pupils’ video debuted on the NHS Dumfries and Galloway Facebook page on Friday and has enjoyed more than 8500 views.
It is the first in a series of three videos set to appear weekly.
The second video features long-term Lochside resident Nita Creighton talking about her own experiences with oral health, and offering ideas for how healthy options can be presented to children and grandchildren.
And finally, NHS Dental Health Officer Shona Muir will present the surprising and sometimes shocking findings of just how much sugar many of us eat on a daily basis.
Consultant in Dental Public Health/Public Health Valerie White said: “Many people have expressed shock at how much sugar is hidden within what you might take to be a pretty healthy diet.
“They’ve said that it’s caused them to think about their diet, and look to perhaps make changes to what they’re eating in a typical day.
“These videos have been really interesting to make, and we think they have a role to play in helping to promote healthy messages around oral health as we continue to work in partnership with communities in North West Dumfries.”
