South Scotland MSP Emma Harper has backed action across Dumfries and Galloway to eradicate single use plastics.
The local MSP attended a parliamentary debate on Wednesday on tackling the impact of single use plastics on land and at sea.
With over 8 million tonnes of plastic washed into the ocean every year the Scottish Government has committed to banning throwaway plastics by 2030.
Commenting, Emma said:
“There are many businesses across Dumfries and Galloway already leading the way on this issue by taking the initiative to reduce single use plastics – because the damage they cause to our environment is clear.
“Beach cleans are organised regularly and restaurant owners I have spoken to – such as John Henry of Henry’s Bayhouse in Stranraer, and Nick Morris at Station House Cookery School –are making a big effort to be as eco-friendly as possible.
“The Refill D&G campaign run by Jayne at the Crichton Carbon Centre Is also a great initiative. It encourages businesses to help make refilling reusable water bottles a cultural norm across Dumfries and Galloway. If you are already giving free water you can still sign up and get recognised for your great work!
“I would encourage any business owners interested in getting involved to contact Refill D&G, or myself so that I can help recognise and promote these positive actions.”
