Solway Forests Red Squirrel Network ( SFRSN ) has received an important donation of £200 from Red Alert South West Scotland to continue a major fundraising drive.
The new funding will enable this recently formed voluntary conservation group to purchase vital camera equipment to monitor the movement and location of both red and grey squirrels. The incursion of greys into Dumfries & Galloway, and resultant transmission of squirrelpox , poses a serious threat to the red squirrel population in the Solway Forest area.
Jamie Carruthers of Red Alert South West Scotland said : “ I am delighted that Red Alert South West Scotland is able to support the Solway Forests Red Squirrel Network. The Network’s contribution to the conservation of the red squirrel is vitally important if this endangered species is to continue to thrive in Dumfries and Galloway. ”
SFRSN was established in August 2017 by a group of volunteers to help protect local red squirrels. This generous donation from Red Alert South West Scotland will greatly benefit the group’s aims and objectives, with the new cameras providing crucial tracking information necessary to continue efforts to contain the incursion of grey squirrels.
The presentation of this award will take place on Friday 8th June at 12 noon in Dalbeattie Town Wood Car Park. Further information is available from : [email protected]
