SPCA APPEAL TO FIND OWNERS OF DUMFRIES LOVEBIRD ‘COSTA’

Quick action from Scottish SPCA officers helped save a love bird on the brink of death in Dumfries.

We were alerted on Wednesday (15 October) when a member of the public discovered the distressed bird in his garden in Birchfield Place.

The love bird, nicknamed Costa, is now recovering in our care.

Animal Rescue Officer Tracy Cannon said, “When we got to Costa the poor wee guy was stunned and looked like he had no life left in him. He wasn’t moving and was lying with his wings spread.

“Just as it looked like all hope was gone, I noticed his eye flicker and straight away we got him into our van to heat him up.

“He was clearly in shock so colleague ran to the nearest coffee shop to get some warm water and sugar which we used to help revive him.

“Within around half an hour he was happily chirping away and sitting on my shoulder, it was miraculous.

“It’s likely Costa has escaped from home and his owners will be worried about him. The recent cold snap would have been difficult for him to bear and luckily we got there when we did.

“With his bright feathers, he would also have been vulnerable to predators such as wild birds and cats.

“We’re now appealing to anyone who knows who Costa may belong to, to get in touch with us.

“If no-one comes forward, we’ll continue to look after him until we can find him a loving new home.”

Anyone who recognises Costa is being urged to contact our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
