Dumfries Museum has organised some exciting activities to celebrate St Andrews Day and provide a fun place to visit for children on their school break
The current exhibition “Strandlines” is all about the local coast and the unusual things that wash up on our beaches. Alongside the exhibition there are lots of drop-in activities including a feely box (dare to put your hand into the dark and guess the seashore objects within), a gallery trail where you have to find the yellow ducks hidden around the museum, quizzes and colouring sheets.
For one day on Thursday 27 November the museum is planning “A day at the seaside!” Drop in for some seaside inspired arts and crafts activities, runs from 10am – 12noon and 2pm – 4pm. Make pebble pets, shell animals, through the porthole pictures and “on the waves” simple automaton toys. An opportunity to make an unusual present for someone at Christmas.
The Strandlines exhibition runs until 29 November. Replenished with debris twice a day the strandline marks the turning point of the last high tide and provides endless material for the curious beachcomber. It is here that the sea deposits seaweeds and creatures washed up from below the waves as well as debris washed down from rivers. Find out more about what you might discover on the Solway seashore. Dumfries Museum is open over the winter, Tuesday to Saturday 10am – 1pm and 2pm – 5pm.
