Stranraer Water Sports Association Start Work On Beach Enhancement

Stranraer Water Sports Association (SWSA) has announced that improvements to Stranraer’s waterfront will start today, when work to enhance the beach between the West Pier and the slipway adjacent to the Harbour offices, begins.

These improvements will create an extended soft beach area designed to enhance swimming opportunities and water sports instruction.

The project involves the removal of a long-redundant sewer outlet and large boulder rocks known as ‘erratics’ – stones that were transported by glaciers during the last ice age and deposited when the ice melted thousands of years ago.

Work will be conducted during low tide periods. The majority of work will be carried out between 10th and 16th April, with a possible additional two-day phase around April 26th. The process will involve removing debris from around the low water mark, which will be temporarily stored above the high-water mark before being transported away for processing as aggregate material.

John Fenwick, Chair of Stranraer Water Sports Association, said:

“This beach enhancement is a crucial component of our Water Sports Hub project. By creating more accessible and safer shoreline conditions, we are expanding opportunities for the local community to enjoy swimming and learn various water sports in an improved environment.”
