Teenage Driver Jailed After Deaths Of 3 Friends

A 19-year-old man has today (Monday, 19 August, 2024) been sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow for death by dangerous driving.

Jake Loy, from Moffat, was jailed for four years and eight months and disqualified from driving for eight years, having previously plead guilty at the High Court in Glasgow.

The crash, involving a Honda Civic driven by Loy, and a Honda CRV, happened around 12.20am on the A711 near Cargenbridge, Dumfries on Wednesday, 16 March, 2022.

As a result of the crash, Ian Cannon, Tyler Johnston and Finlay Johns, all aged 16 from Moffat, lost their lives. Three men in the CRV were seriously injured, with two of them suffering life-threatening injuries.

Road policing Chief Inspector Lorraine Napier said: “I would like to pay tribute to the families and friends of the three young men who lost their lives in this crash and thank everyone who worked so diligently to bring this case to a conclusion.
“No conviction or sentence will ever reflect the impact the crash had on the families and friends of Ian, Tyler and Finlay but I hope it brings some measure of closure.”
