THIRD DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY VICTIM LOSES £18,000 IN BANKING SCAM

Further victim of banking scam – Newton Stewart

Police Scotland is investigating a third victim of the current banking scam which is going about the Stranraer and Newton Stewart areas of Dumfries and Galloway. In this latest report a 70 year old woman from Newton Stewart lost £18,000 on Saturday evening (4 April 2015) when she was contacted by someone purporting to be from her bank. The lady was informed that her account was under threat from someone trying to hack into it from Spain and that she should transfer the contents of the account into a safe account. The lady was then talked through the process and transferred £18,000 into an account that she was given details of. She only realised that it was a scam the following day.

A number of other near misses have also been reported to police where the scam has been identified before any monies have been transferred. Police Scotland ask that anyone who has been called, whether they identified the scam or are actually a victim, having transferred funds, should contact police immediately through 101.
