Whip’s Office promotion for Dumfries and Galloway MP

SOUTH west Scotland MP Alister Jack has received his second promotion this year at Westminster.

The appointment of the Dumfries and Galloway constituency representative as a Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury was confirmed on Tuesday evening.

Mr Jack, 56, moves up from his job as an Assistant Government Whip to the more senior role of Government Whip.

He succeeds Craig Whitaker, MP, who has been made Vice-Chamberlain of HM Household.

Mr Jack, who lives near Dumfries, has a farming and international business background and won the seat from the SNP in the June, 2017 General Election with a substantial 5,643 majority.

He and his Whip’s Office colleagues have built up a bank of experience during historic and dramatic weeks at Westminster with Brexit debates and votes extending late into the evenings.

Mr Jack said: “There is no escaping the fact these are challenging times in the Commons and I will being doing my utmost to help secure progress in the weeks ahead.
“However, as I’ve stated previously, my main focus will remain representing the people of Dumfries and Galloway constituency.”
