WIGTOWN SHOW PREVIEW 2015
Wigtown Agricultural Show is a very popular one-day show in South West Scotland. This year’s takes place on Wednesday 5th August at Bladnoch Park and is shaping up to be another busy one! Hundreds of animals, of all kinds, will be judged in the morning and there are over 140 trade exhibitors around the showfield and in the Food and Craft marquees plus Wigtown Show has the largest Poultry Show in South West Scotland.
The Champion of Champions will take place at approximately 1pm in the main ring, when this year’s judge Mr Dennis Gall from Stirling will keep the audience in suspense as he views the line-up of 22 Champion animals from the morning’s judging before selecting the winner, who will receive the coveted Craig Cup. Mr Andrew McCornick, National Farmers Union for Scotland Vice–President is presenting the trophies this year and we are delighted that there are also a few RHASS long service medals for him to present to local farm employees. The grand parade of livestock is a sight to behold, as the rugby pitch size main ring fills with beef and dairy cattle, heavy and light horses, goats and donkeys. When the animals make an exit, the entertainment continues with Stannage International Stunt team and their Flaming High Fall Show, Dog Show (entries on the day), a Tug o’War Competition organised by Machars Young Farmers, Heavy Horse Driving and Galloway Pony Club’s Musical Display Team, which is making its debut at Wigtown Show.
The entertainment isn’t restricted to the main ring at Wigtown Show – around the showfield there is everything from showjumping, owl display, spinning, weaving & crook making demonstrations, funfair and children’s rides to scarecrows. There’s even Dog Agility in the car park for your dog to have a go! On the stage in the Craft & Lifestyle marquee you’ll find Daffy Dill the children’s entertainer, Highland dancing display, fun and stories with Curly Tale Books and music from local young singer Caitlin McCornick. A highlight for many last year was the fabulous “Sheep Show” and so it is back by popular demand, kindly sponsored by Montpelier Ltd. Catch one of their four performances throughout the day – you can’t miss their large display lorry, situated between the main ring and sheep judging rings – stay to the end of their show to see the dancing sheep!
Livestock judging starts with the ridden horses at 8.30am, cattle, light & heavy horses, donkeys, sheep, goats and poultry are judged throughout the morning, as are the fleece, sticks & crooks and scarecrow competitions. So plan your day to make sure you see everything, catalogues will be on sale which provide more information. There is lots of car parking available adjacent to the showfield, however you may prefer to catch the “Wigtown Show Bus” from Wigtown town centre. It runs to and from Wigtown and the showfield all day from 9am – 5pm.
